DO ECTOMYCORRHIZAL FUNGAL SPECIES HAVE POTENTIAL INFLUENCE ON RESTORATION OF DISTURBED SOIL?
REN R 480 COURSE PROJECT
NNENNA ONWUCHEKWA
Mycorrhizal inoculation has been proven beneficial in a wide range of situations. These include reforestation of clear cuts and grasslands, reclamation of disturbed lands, reforestation after wildfires, and introduction of exotic plants. Therefore, most mining industries has resorted to exploring mycorrhizal biotechnology because of these benefits and the increasing need to rebuild the forest ecosystem close enough or comparable to undisturbed terrain.
Understanding, the how a consortium of mycorrhizal species interact at a field level application would improve reforestation practices using mycorrhizal inoculation stocks with better growth and survival potential in the disturbed sites. Furthermore, our research would help in the development of a process for transferring an important mycorrhizal biotechnology to reclamation industry and commercial forest nurseries.
